Target Audience:
This course is tailored for healthcare professionals involved in the early recognition, assessment, and management of stroke patients across a range of care environments. Target participants include EMS personnel, emergency department staff, nurses, physicians, and other clinicians responsible for time-sensitive neurological emergencies.
Course Overview:
The Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS) Provider Course, developed by the Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education and endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA), is designed to enhance the ability of professionals to recognize and manage stroke in its critical early stages. This course equips learners with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve stroke outcomes through timely identification, treatment, and transport.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the ASLS course, participants will:
-
Rapidly identify the signs and symptoms of all major stroke types, including ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
-
Perform focused neurological assessments using standardized tools such as the MEND exam.
-
Understand the critical time-sensitive interventions needed to reduce disability and mortality in stroke patients.
-
Determine appropriate triage and transport decisions, including the identification of patients who are candidates for thrombolytic therapy or endovascular procedures.
-
Implement an organized and systematic approach to stroke care within the first hour of symptom onset.
-
Facilitate seamless communication and handoff between prehospital and hospital stroke teams.
Course Highlights:
-
Up-to-date science and protocols based on the latest AHA guidelines and stroke care best practices.
-
Integration of the Miami Emergency Neurologic Deficit (MEND) exam for accurate and rapid neurological assessment.
-
Case-based scenarios simulating real-world stroke presentations and interventions.
-
Review of prehospital stroke triage tools such as LAMS and RACE scales.
-
Emphasis on improving door-to-needle times and streamlining transitions of care.
Learning Experience:
-
Instructor-led sessions supported by high-quality videos and interactive simulations.
-
Hands-on practice of neurologic assessments and stroke management algorithms.
-
Collaborative case reviews that reinforce clinical reasoning and communication during stroke emergencies.
Certification:
Participants who successfully complete the course, including all skills evaluations and the final written examination, will receive an ASLS Provider certification, valid for two years.
Pre-Course Requirement:
Participants are required to complete the pre-course self-assessment prior to attending class. The assessment must be submitted in PDF format on the day of the course. Failure to meet this requirement will result in rescheduling. Access the pre-course assessment at: [Insert official pre-course link if available]
